price shows what Malaysian shops charge for everyday groceries, using the government's PriceCatcher survey.

Where the prices come from

Prices come from PriceCatcher, the price survey run by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Survey officers record prices at more than 2,000 premises across Malaysia: hypermarkets, supermarkets, mini markets, grocery shops, wet markets and wholesalers.

The data is published daily on OpenDOSM under CC BY 4.0, and we download the latest files every day. Fresh produce is surveyed most days; the full list (packaged goods, drinks, baby and household items) on one big survey day each week.

How it works

  • Current priceEach shop's latest price for an item within the last 14 days of data, not just the newest day, because most items are surveyed once a week. The date the price was seen is always shown.
  • Typical priceThe median of current prices in the area you pick. The percentage on each shop compares its price with that median.
  • Possible data errorsPrices below 0.33× or above 3× the item's national median for that month are hidden by default (think carrots at RM0.04/kg). You can show them again.
  • Sizes and gradesEvery size and grade is its own item and is never ranked against another. Units are shown exactly as surveyed.
  • RestaurantsRestaurants and food courts are in the survey but are kept out of grocery rankings.
  • Shop locationsThe survey has no coordinates. We place shops using OpenStreetMap data (shops, streets, housing areas) and GeoNames postcodes. Shops we can only place by town or district are marked approximate. Distances are straight-line.
  • Klang ValleyHere means the whole of W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and W.P. Putrajaya.
  • HistoryWeekly median and range since 1 Jan 2022, for Malaysia, a state or a district.

price is an independent, unofficial app. It isn't affiliated with KPDN, DOSM or the PriceCatcher app. Prices are survey observations on the date shown and may differ in store.
